June 4, 1918 - December 27, 2011
Juanita Irene Harms, age 93, a resident of Prairie Creek Assisted Living (PCAL) in West Bend, Iowa, died peacefully at the West Bend Care Center on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Services will be held Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, West Bend with Rev. Evelyn Lewiston officiating, with burial to follow in the West Bend Cemetery. Visitation is from 9:30 AM until time of service at the church in West Bend. Harris Funeral Home of West Bend is in charge of arrangements. Juanita, the only child of Axel Walter and Iva Mae Hansen, was born June 4, 1918, in West Bend. She graduated from West Bend High School in 1936. After graduation, Juanita attended Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota, earning her diploma as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1939. Prior to her marriage, Juanita was a surgical scrub nurse at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She took several years off from nursing to marry and start a family. When Juanita resumed her nursing career, she worked first at Kersten Clinic in Fort Dodge and later at a Dubuque, Iowa, nursing home. In retirement, Juanita took thousands of blood pressure readings as a community clinic volunteer. On December 7, 1941, the day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Juanita married Paul Edward Harms, her high school sweetheart, who was home on leave for the wedding. Following their wedding, Paul and Juanita lived first in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and then in Minneapolis, Minnesota. When Paul's army assignment changed, Juanita returned to West Bend with their infant son for the duration of Paul's military service. Following Paul's discharge from the military, and as they reared their son Jerry and daughter Nancy, the couple lived in a series of Iowa towns: Ventura, Rock Rapids, Fort Dodge, Early, Independence, Waverly, and Dubuque. When Paul retired, they moved to Humboldt. As Juanita's parents aged, Juanita and Paul returned to live in West Bend and care for them. Wherever they lived, Juanita and Paul stayed busy, volunteering their time and talents to their community and their church. They particularly felt and shared the joy of the Cursillo and Walk to Emmaus movements. Juanita will be missed by her son Jerry Harms (Linda); son-in-law Robert Enright (Jeanette); grandchildren Julie Harms, Nathan Harms, Shawn (Anna) Enright, and Kevin Enright; nephew Robert (Pat) Harms, and nieces Eileen (Jim) Gibson and Rosemary (Steve) Guttormsson; and many special friends and neighbors, including Pearl and Virgil Enockson. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul, and her daughter Nancy Enright. Juanita enjoyed walking and exercise class. She credited these activities with enriching and extending her life.
