Larry Dornath

Larry Duane, son of Ted and Frieda (Schoon) Dornath, was born February 3, 1940, in his family's home, rural Gilmore City, in Pocahontas County, Iowa. He attended country school in Pocahontas County and graduated from Rolfe High School in 1958. Larry lived and farmed in the Gilmore City area his entire life. On February 25, 1967, Larry was united in marriage with Dona Abbas in Kanawha, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. Larry served in the Army Reserves 339 Military Police in various locations throughout the United States from December 1962 to December 1968. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, rural Palmer, and served in many capacities including Usher, Treasurer, and Sunday School Superintendent. Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping and was a member of Pheasants Forever. He also enjoyed gardening, especially caring for his fruit trees. He raised sheep and was a conservationist, planting wildflowers and creating habitats for various wild birds. Larry was a member of bowling leagues in both Pocahontas and Humboldt Counties and was an avid sports fan. Larry died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Humboldt Care Center - South in Humboldt, Iowa, where he had resided for about seven weeks. Survivors include his mother, Frieda, of Amarillo, TX, children Sarah and Brenda Dornath both of Humboldt, IA and Douglas Dornath of Gilmore City, IA, sister Virginia Olesen and her husband Harold of Amarillo, TX, sister-in-law Doris Gillespie of Humboldt, IA, brother-in-law Richard Abbas of Goldfield, IA, eight nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Ted, and his wife, Dona, in 2007.
