Marshall Compton

Visitation for Marshall Compton, 92, of Mallard, will be 4-8 pm Friday at Harris Funeral Home in Mallard. A graveside service with military rites will be conducted at a later date at Rush Lake Cemetery near Curlew. Marshall LaVern Compton was born June 6, 1920, in Mallard, Iowa. When Marshall was 13, his family moved to a farm west of Mallard. Marshall attended school in Mallard, graduating from Mallard High School in 1937. He farmed with his family until entering the service during World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theatre. Upon his honorable discharge at the end of the war, Marshall returned to Mallard to farm once again and he continued farming for the rest of his life. He was united in marriage with Beverly Johnston May 18, 1952 at the Methodist church in Ayrshire, Iowa. The couple made their home on the farm near Mallard where they raised their three children. Marshall and Bev moved into the town of Mallard in 1998, though Marshall continued to farm for several more years. Marshall served on several boards, including Palo Alto County ASCS, United Methodist Church, and Northwest Telephone Cooperative for 25 years amoung others. He played town team baseball and was an avid golfer. Marshall died Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He is survived by Beverly, his wife of 60 years, Mallard, IA; daughters Deb (Jim) Fisher, Algona, IA and Diane Cooke (Jim Reding), Emmetsburg, IA; son Dave Compton, Remsen, IA; grandchildren: Philip Fisher, Eugene (Shaylene) Fisher, Brent Cooke and Brad (Amber) Cooke; and eight great grandchildren. Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mabel and Grace and granddaughter Heather Cooke.
