Roger Hayungs Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Roger Hayungs, age 79 of Algona, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Monday, August 8th at the Divine Mercy Catholic Parish – St. Cecelia in Algona. Mass will be livestreamed on Divine Mercy's YouTube page https://youtu.be/Tar3AjThd8g. Visitation will be 2:30 – 5:00pm Sunday, August 7th at Lentz Funeral Home in Algona. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Roger Eugene Hayungs, the son of Claus and Thelma (Ackley) Hayungs, was born on May 5, 1943 in Plainfield, Iowa. He attended school at Garner-Hayfield, graduating in 1961. After high school, Roger studied Agribusiness at Eastern Iowa Community College in Muscatine. On August 28, 1965, he was united in marriage to Mary Arndorfer in St. Benedict, Iowa. Roger was a sales manager for local farmers’ cooperatives until his retirement in 2005. Roger was very creative with woodworking and would often build bird houses and nativity scenes. The elaborate train sets he constructed provided lots of entertainment for his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf, loved watching many sports, especially football, and was a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan. He managed to make it to every sporting event of his 5 children—rain, snow, or shine—and gave lots of encouragement from the sidelines. Roger was known to share a beer (or 2?) along with his quick wit and plenty of laughter with family and friends. He was a big supporter of the Rolfe Golf Club, was a member of the city council, and at one time served as the Mayor of Rolfe. Roger was a Eucharistic minister, lector, and usher at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Rolfe. Left to cherish Roger’s memory are his wife of almost 57 years, Mary Hayungs of Algona; children, Debra (Doug) Houseman of Sioux Falls, SD, Angela Hayungs of San Antonio, TX, David Hayungs of Alton, IA, Jennifer Higgins of Fort Myers, FL, and Michael (Jessica) Hayungs of Zurich, Switzerland; nine grandchildren, Jake (Kassie) Houseman and Jordyn (Andy) Green, Jenna, Emily, and Leah Hayungs, Kassie and Kalvin MacPeek, and Sienna and Adrian Hayungs; and four great grandchildren, Evelyn, Chiara, Sophia, and Miles. He is preceded in death by his parents, Claus and Thelma Hayungs; brothers, Ernist, Robert, and Larry; and sister, Donna. Memorials may be made in Roger's name and directed to Bishop Garrigan Schools.
