Gilmore City...Wanda A. Hodgell, 89 of Gilmore City, died Sunday June 19, 2011 at the North Care Center, Humboldt. Services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 AM at Faith United Methodist Church Gilmore City with Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Harris Funeral Home of Gilmore City is in charge of arrangements. Wanda Alberta (Peers) Hodgell was the oldest of 4 daughters born to Hattie Ercelle (Hicks) and Albert Freeman Peers. She was born near Glasgow, Kentucky on November 27, 1921. In 1925 her family moved to rural Rolfe where she attended country school. She married Cyrus Merle Hodgell on November 19, 1940 at the Methoidst parsonage in Pocahontas, Iowa. Wanda and Merle made their home in the Rolfe and Gilmore City areas during their married lives where they farmed and raised dairy cattle. The couple had 4 children: Marla Marie, Mary Helen, Frederick Albert and Cyrus Merle II. Wanda was an avid gardener, birdwatcher and reader. She was full of knowledge of the world, both past and present, as well as family history. She spent most of her life working on the farm with her husband and children and had a great appreciation and respect for the outdoors. She also loved spending time in the kitchen. Wanda will be sorely missed by her entire family and her friends for both her wit and wisdom. Survivors include her daughter, Marla (Steve Strait) Hodgell, of Niceville Florida, her son Fred (Donna) Hodgell of Gilmore City, and her sister Violet (Glen) Schoon of Cave City, Aransas, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Cyrus Merle Hodgell II, her daughter Mary Clark, her husband, C. Merle Hodgell, her sisters, Helen Johnson and Audrey Johnson as well as her parents H. Ercelle and Albert Peers.
